There are quite a few other European projects.
And WCG isn't European.
The projects might have acted without need, but this way they can be certain not to get into trouble.
Bummer is, people not contributing anymore because of some stupid statistics not being nice'n'easy anymore, won't do anything about the possibly existing underlying problem with the GDPR, they will just not support science.

Agreed, it is a strange decision from BudgieSoft and his team. They are in effect punishing the wrong people. It's their own decision of course.

But how hard is it to tick a checkbox on some projects?

I couldn't agree more with (Ryle) and gemini8.

The EU did the GDPR law changing here, and like many of their laws, this one was well meaning. But they clearly didn't specifically consider - for one minute - the significant impact it might have on the global BOINC community, and quite possibly other areas like ... like ... maybe the ability of a one man band business to send Christmas emails to all his customers without asking them first if they wanted one!

It know it's quite unlikely, but just for a minute imagine that someone in power in a major country decided to change a law ostensibly to protect its people (or at least some of them) or their interests. It could happen. Would it be right for people outside of that country to unilaterally withdraw their support from all it's good and worthwhile science organisations because of it? Well technically of course, they can if they want. But that wouldn't make it the right thing to do. Of course it wouldn't. That would be cutting off the nose to spite the face. It wouldn't be the fault of the science organisations allowing all of us to help them do sterling work. They are merely trying to find the answers to questions that will hopefully benefit us all, and not focusing on laws being made sometimes outside of their own countries. Yes I know they should have been more on the ball. They should have seen it coming, and perhaps some should have thought more before changing stuff. But lets give them a break. They do good work.

They should all probably stick a question up right now asking something along the lines of "Can we assume a default answer to any question that we might ask in the future, leaving you free to change said answer when we tell you what we have assumed it to be?"

Now, back to my Christmas e-cards.

Thanks globalization...
But are BOINC date really private data? Have anybody used his real name or added his address as comment?
My Team have over 700 user but in the statistics only 7 are visible because nobody of the rest cares about (statistics and GDRP).
And the best, all countries already had some laws for data protection, I'm sure sone also so strong, but nobody cared.

Sorry but I'm a bit frustrated

For as long as I can remember we've had the right to hide our rigs.
Now we're getting the right to hide our rigs' performance - at least from responsible projects.

But until now it was a Opt-Out and not a Opt-In ... this is bad because of all the lazy, uninformed people out there.

How to check that mark on LHC*? They don't have BOINC login on their page. Also, WCG and WuProp both don't have a GDPR form. Have anyone managed to do that?
Yours truly, Pavel.

The EU sometimes does crazy things - 'cookies' warning was blown up to be a storm in a teacup, and has since been annulled.
My understanding of GDPR is that it MUST be opt in - EU sites risk sizeable fines if they don't adhere. Let's hope the EU wises up on non-commercial sites.
WCG was quick on the scene as it is hosted by the very commercial IBM.

My WUProp properties start like this -
Resource share
Determines the proportion of your computer's resources allocated to this project. Example: if you participate in two BOINC projects with resource shares of 100 and 200, the first will get 1/3 of your resources and the second will get 2/3. %2
---
Use CPU
Enforced by version 6.10+

Run test applications?
This helps us develop applications, but may cause jobs to fail on your computer

Is it OK for WUProp@Home and your team (if any) to email you?

Should WUProp@Home show your computers on its web site?

Should WUProp@Home show app hours statistics on your account data page and export statistics?

Under my profile on WCG there is the following paragraph -
Choose to display or hide your data

You can control whether your data is displayed or hidden. If you choose to display your data, your username and contribution statistics will be shown on our leader boards, your badges and country (if specified) will be shown in our forums and your user and device information will be included in any data export files. See our Privacy Statement for more details.

Display my data

Hide my data

Please note that it could take several hours for the change to take effect.

The checkbox has been removed, at least temporarily. See the "Server Upgrade" thread in the "News" section of their forum, starting about here.

What makes Europe think they have the right to run our life over here in the USA? I think it is time for a class action suit against these idiots. Boycott all European products until these Mickey Mouse laws are done away with.

Wow! I sincerely hope that comment was said tongue in cheek and dripping with sarcasm, because the alternative might begin to explain far too much!

That's not very internationalist of you. Having to send a couple of emails or whatever is hardly "running your life".
Legislators often affect matters outside their own territories. I dare say there are a few examples of your own country's laws impacting EU citizens.

So I lost me credit at Einstein@Home on 12-19-2018, but today I add the OK to Einstein@Home preferences/PRIVACY SETTINGS. Do this mean they are gone forever on Boinc STATS?

I completely agree, the EU is big federal nightmare, run by unelected "leaders" with communist background (Merkel, Junker, Truss) I am serious I agree 100% with Bharritt.

GDPR is even worse, I get more crap in my inbox now because of GDPR companies think they have a right to email me through some convoluted consent mechanism.

Can't wait until March 29th we just might be able to get out of this socialist control club.

The problem is your patience. Projects export stats every couple of hours, not when you click that checkbox.
